“When all the warmth of life is given in the name of art, I often feel pain in my stomach and a poisonous taste of iron in my mouth. Then I, completely alone, lie on the ground, bury my ankles, calves, thighs in it, wait for my earthly element to start moving in me again in a soft and warm stream.”

Fābula gallery is pleased to present a new solo project of Victoria Kosheleva “Terra”.

Terra is a word with multiple meanings. It designates both land as soil and land as territory. In those of her works collected for this exhibition, Victoria refers to these images as the embodiment of one of the four elements:

“Recently, the earth has become very important for me. I thought a lot about it both as a source of life and as an element. After all, she is the source of strength, which enables everything to regenerate endlessly and freely.”

For the artist, the connection with the earth becomes almost a ritual, esoteric act: when buying natural pigments for her works in the Atlas Mountains, she was struck by the fact that, in essence, these are just minerals, one of the resources extracted from the earth:

“And, therefore, I also use the resource of the earth for my works, through it I express my thoughts.” – says the artist, emphasizing the isolation of this exchange with nature.

The spirituality of this connection can also be traced in the visual component of Victoria’s works. Neo-surreal landscapes and fantastic characters are half-familiar reflections of the territory of the world of the subconscious, the land of fantasies and dreams.

About the artist

Victoria Kosheleva was born in Moscow, to a family of artists. She studied at the Surikov Art Institute in Moscow, graduating from the faculty of monumental and decorative painting in 2012. In 2013 she had an internship at the Parsons School of Design. Victoria lives and works in Paris and Moscow.

In her artistic practice Victoria merges contemporary and classical imagery. In one of her interviews, she described her works as ‘cyber-expressionism’. The subconscious plays an important role in Victoria’s practice. In her paintings she tends to create surreal worlds consisting of memories and fantasies, imagery and landscapes which are often taken out of their familiar context.
